AVSS Training Program for Crowd Managers

The Academy for Venue Safety and Security (AVSS) released a new two-phase training program for crowd managers, available now. The first phase is a self-paced, four-hour web-based training platform, available from the International Association of Assembly Managers (IAAM) website. The second phase is a two-hour, venue-specific training and orientation available to venues for combination with standard annual or pre-season guest services training. A certificate of Trained Crowd Manager is issued on completion of both phases.

The total cost of training is $15 per individual.  Bulk licenses are available at a discount rate of 5%, 10% or 15%, depending on the number of licensees your venue needs.  In addition to a discounted rate, bulk licenses will have access to curriculum materials and a template PowerPoint to assist with phase two of the training program.

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Life Safety Code 101 requires at least one Trained Crowd Manager for every 250 guests in public assembly venues. This new code is currently in effect in 34 states and applies to stadiums, arenas, shopping malls, clubs, banquet halls and restaurants. To ensure your venue meets NFPA code and that your guests, employees and venue are protected, AVSS is offering this web-based training program.

Learning Objectives:

  • Recognize and report hazards that could endanger life or property.
  • Understand crowd dynamics, crowd management, and crowd control techniques.
  • Recognize and utilize venue fire protection and communication equipment.
  • Identify different types of emergency evacuations and shelter-in-place operations and the challenges associated with each.
  • Develop specific knowledge of the emergency response actions the individual crowd manager will be responsible for within the venue.
  • Safely direct and assist people during an emergency or non‐emergency evacuation.
  • Effectively search an area within a public assembly venue to ensure it is clear of all occupants.
