Palmer joined Ice Capades in 1942 and served in a number of positions
including touring company manager, studio manager and technical
director. He had a vast knowledge of the technical and operational
aspects of an ice show and his familiarity with arenas throughout North
America contributed greatly to the tour arrangements for the three
companies of Ice Capades.
Palmer was a friend to IAVM and a
major supporter of the Scholarship Fund and IAVM social events during
annual conferences. He received the first Special Recognition Award
during the 1974 annual conference in recognition of his support.
“Dick
was always gentlemanly and professional in his dealings and was about
doing the right thing,” said industry veteran Mike McGee. “I remember
when I was an assistant in Monroe (LA) and Lakeland (FL), Dick always
made me feel special at the Ice Capades events held at the IAVM annual
conferences. When I later went to Houston we were able to enjoy a great
personal and working relationship due in part to having known each other
earlier. He was a man of integrity and class and will be missed by
many.”
“I am sure that I speak for many others, but Dick
was very instrumental in my early career development as a venue manager
in this industry,” added IAVM CEO and President Dexter King. “He touched
many lives in a very positive way during his career and will be sorely
missed.”
