On December 18, 2010, the IAVM Board of Directors unanimously approved
Honorary Membership for Jim Hess, CFE. Hess joined IAVM in 1978 and
served on 14 committees totaling 36 years of service as a volunteer of
IAVM. During his service to the Association, Hess served on the Board of
Directors as a District Vice President for District 6 from 1998-2000
and again from 2003-2005 as a District Vice President for District 3 –
the first member recorded to hold two seats in two different districts
on the Board of Directors.
Other milestones with IAVM include:
In 1999-2000, Hess was a part of the building sub-committee that
recommended to both the membership and the Board of Directors of the
Association take a leap of faith and build World Headquarters where
staff office today; Organizational Task Force co-chair 1999-2001;
External Affairs Committee leading to a role with the newly formed
Industry Affairs Council; Safety & Security Task Force following
9/11/2001 and also a member of the first Life Safety Council;
International Relations Committee; Certification Board and the Oglebay
Alumni Association Executive Committee.
Hess earned his
Certified Facilities Executive designation in 1991 and graduated from
the Public Assembly Facility Management School in 1990.
Hess
retired as the Executive Director of the Monona Terrace Convention
Center in Madison, Wis., on December 10, 2010. He and his wife Marci
plan to stay in Wisconsin and are currently building their retirement
home on 10 acres of land, located about an hour west of Madison. Hess
says his future holds plans for more fly-fishing and playing more golf.
