Some ‘Green' ideas to consider before coming to ICCC

By Kayla McKinley posted 08-31-2012 13:15

This year's International Convention Center Conference will be held Sept. 27-29, and takes place in a very green city — Seattle.

So, it makes sense that the ICCC conference planning committee would look to keep the event as sustainable as possible. The committee started by checking with the Sheraton Seattle Hotel and the Washington State Convention Center. And, as expected, both venues have great sustainability programs already in place. The committee decided to approach sustainability farther down the planning process, and start all the way back to the day someone would decide to register.

While many of the tips are easy to activate, many times it's just hard to remember them all. So we thought we'd highlight some green tips they've uncovered before you even step onto the plane.

Ryan Green, sustainability development coordinator, and Lisa Witherell, LEED AP, director of convention operations at the Sands Expo and Convention Center, were part of the ICCC conference planning committee that took the lead. Both come from a venue that holds a LEED certification, and is located in a city where most of the large venues have top-notch sustainability programs.

What, you say? Las Vegas? The 24/7 city in the desert with more lights per capita than people is going sustainable? Yes, Las Vegas has become a leader in finding ways to reduce consumption, recycle, compost, renew and reuse. So they were glad to share their tips and hope you'll take advantage of them.

GREEN TIPS
  • Register online — Saves time and paper consumption.
  • Use paperless ticketing and digital check-in on your flight.
  • Pack light — Not only will this save your back, but it saves fuel on the plane.
  • Take alternative transportation — Check for trains. Share a cab. Carpool if you can.
  • Stay close — Planning ahead and booking early means getting a hotel close to the action. Reduce your carbon footprint with fewer cab rides and less time spent driving around looking for a parking spot for your rental car.
  • Download the Mobile app — Save paper and be kept up-to-date on last minute room or time changes.
  • Participate in Green Programs — Many hotels have comprehensive sustainability programs. Look around your room for opportunities to participate like linen and towel programs, recycling, water conservation techniques, and green dining efforts.
  • At the End — When you are ready to leave, look for places to drop your lanyard or paper materials you aren't taking home. Lanyards are one of the most requested donated items used in schools across the U.S. today.
Don't forget to register! Early Bird savings end Tuesday, September 7 at midnight.
