Lots of good information was shared during this session and I am posting the powerpoint on VenueNet. Wendi Shafir, LEED AP Polution Prevention Coordinator for EPA, reported on some outstanding "green" numbers from facilities in California...HP Pavilion is diverting 97% of its waste, Moscone Center is recyling 75% of its waste, Pac Bell Park saved $100K on energy costs and San Diego Convention Center saved 58K.
Wendi asked the group how many knew of zero waste...she explained that in reality, it would be nearly impossible to reach 100%...so if you achieve 90% or over in waste reduction/diversion, you are considered a Zero Waste facility.
She encouraged all venues to research and enter into EPA's Voluntary Programs. Green Venues Program Options include EPA technical support and recognition in these areas: energy conservation, renewable energy, climate change, water conservation, solid wast reduction, sustainable food and beverage service, Green procurement/reduced use of toxins. The Powerpoint presentation gives you tons more information and links to find information.
Ryan Thorpe, Portland Convention Center, updated the group on IAAM's Sustainability Committee work along with recent survey results that showed 87% of IAAM member venues are have implemented green or sustainable practices. He also took a few minutes to share the most recent information from the Convention Industry Council's Accepted Practices Exchange (APEX) Green Standards.
The Sustainability Committee has done a great job hosting webinars and using VenueNet as a resource for our members.
