Plane Crash in Alaska - Update

By Dexter King posted 06-18-2010 08:55

Many of you have asked, or expressed concern, about the recent tragedy involving my sisters son, Preston in Achorage. June 2, 1: 15 am: Preston, had a small-plane accident in Anchorage.  His four-year-old son, Myles, was trapped in the back of the burning plane and died.  Preston, Stacie, and the baby, Hudson have been flown to a Portland burn hospital Legacy Emanuel.  They are all in critical condition.

Wednesday morning, June 2: Preston, Stacie, and 2 year old baby Hudson are stabilized at the Emanuel Burn Center in Portland, and are heavily medicated so that they cannot move or feel.  They have 3rd degree burns.  Stacie is burned the worst--on all extremities.  Preston is burned on his legs.  The baby got an electrical shock/burn on the back of his head when the plane hit a wire going down.  Preston has multiple fractures on the front of his face and has to have a venerator because of obstructed airways.  No one appears to have internal injuries.

Wednesday evening, June 2: Stacie's parents arrived in Portland and were able to see the three of them.  In addition to the burns mentioned before, Stacie has a collapsed lung and both lungs have a lot of soot from the smoke.  She may loose a finger and several toes.  Preston has a fragment of bone floating near his eye that is from the facial fractures.  Doctors will remove the bone if it comes nearer to the eye.  Preston will need reconstructive surgery on his face.  They will all be kept heavily sedated for a week or two.

Thursday morning, June 3: The three are still in critical condition.  Stacie is in the worst condition with 49% of her body burned.  There is continued concern about the possible loss of fingers or toes.  They cannot find a pulse in her feet.  It is predicted that she will be in the burn center for two months.   Stacie has a collapsed lung and both lungs have a lot of soot from the smoke.  Preston is awake but still heavily sedated and immobilized. There continues to be danger for his right eye from the impact and floating bone splinters.  At this point, the retina cannot be seen.  Preston will eventually be put in a body cast to keep the traumatized spine straight for the lumbar bones to heal from the shock.  It is predicted that he will be in the burn center for one month and will begin reconstructive surgeries for his face when it is possible.  Baby Hudson will have an MRI today. He has swelling in his face--they all do.  He sat up today and is doing the best of the three. The back of his scalp is burned to the bone and will need reconstructive surgery by a neural surgeon.

Thoughts and prayers for the family are appreciated.

Godspeed for healing and recovery during this time. And praying that "peace that passes understanding" finds your family as they deal with the loss of a child and the recovery and healing process of those who remain critically ill.
