Paradigms of Excellence by Dexter King, CFE

Dexter King, CFE,retired, was most recently the President & CEO of the International Association of Venue Managers, Inc. (formerly known as IAAM) since 2001, headquartered in the United States in Coppell (Dallas), Texas. As a past President of IAAM and a 33-year venue professional of the sports, entertainment, and exhibition industry, Mr. King has experienced management at all levels and in all types of public venues. Prior to IAAM, he served as the Regional General Manager of SMG of Alaska, overseeing five public venues in the Alaskan region. He has also held the position of Executive Director of the Boise State University Pavilion in Boise, Idaho, where he hosted many high profile events including NCAA and NBA events as well as performances by a wide variety of artists and personalities. Before moving to Boise, Mr. King was the Executive Director for five public venues at Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Additionally, Mr. King has overseen the construction of five venues during his tenure.

Over the course of Mr. King’s 33 years of involvement with IAAM, he has been noted for his proactive role in education. As a leader in the Association, he has been instrumental in the founding of the Public Assembly Facility Management School (PAFMS) at Oglebay Park in Wheeling, West Virginia; the Arena Management Conference (AMC); the Leadership Institute and the University Venue Management Conference (UVMC). He has played a key role in the development of the core competencies for the Body of Knowledge Text Book, Public Assembly Facility Management: Principles and Practices and “Best Practice” guidelines for Safety and Security for all major public venues. He has also helped the Association emerge as an advocate for public assembly facility managers. Mr. King has encouraged partnerships and cooperation for all entities with a vested interest in public venues. Mr. King is on the board of the Boise Convention & Visitors Bureau. Mr. King also serves as secretary for the TEAM Coalition (Techniques for Effective Alcohol Management), an organization devoted to promoting responsible alcohol management.

As a long-time contributor and executive in the industry, Mr. King has devoted his career to the education and enhancement of the venue management profession. In 1981, Mr. King was the recipient of the Francis Deering Award for distinguished meritorious service to District 6 of IAAM and earned his CFE (Certified Facilities Executive) credentials in 1987. He was named as an Honorary Lifetime Member of the Venue Management Association (Asia & Pacific) LTD, (VMA), 1994. In 1997, King was recognized with the highest industry honor as a recipient of IAAM’s prestigious Charles A. McElravy Award for outstanding contributions to the profession.
